Green Valley's Holiday Season Runs on Shifts This Year: Mornings at the Preserve, Nights at the Cactus Garden

November 5, 2026

At 1:30 in the afternoon, the gate routine at the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve ends the day's elf hunt. Three and a half hours later, the lights come up at Ethel M's cactus garden on Cactus Garden Drive. On weekends, Green Valley Ranch's Backyard Terrace keeps pouring fireside cocktails for guests 21 and older until 11 p.m., an hour after the garden goes dark.

Each of those cutoffs falls at a different hour. This year, Green Valley's holiday events divide the day into shifts, and each venue keeps a clock of its own. If you plan the season by date alone, you will arrive at the preserve after it closes or reach the Santa line after it has been cut off. If you plan by hour, a single December Saturday can hold four venues in sequence.

Morning Belongs to the Preserve

The earliest shift is also the one that ends soonest. From November 28 through December 23, 2026, the City of Henderson runs The Great Migratory Elf Hunt at the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve, 350 E. Galleria Dr. Hours are 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. It's a self-paced scavenger hunt for all ages. Registered participants get a map and a sticker set, then look for elves hidden among the reeds, trees and trails. Featherbell is posted near the hummingbirds, and Pinecone Pete sits beneath the shady mesquites. Registration is required, so this is one event you can't decide on at the gate.

The preserve departs from its own schedule once. The city's Winter Solstice at the Bird Viewing Preserve runs on Sunday, December 20, from 2 to 4 p.m., with self-guided activities, seasonal crafts and refreshments. It's the only afternoon on this season's preserve calendar.

Late Morning Through Afternoon Belongs to The District

When the preserve winds down, The District at Green Valley Ranch is already open. Its December calendar consists almost entirely of daytime markets, packed into the first three Saturdays of the month and the Thursdays between them:

Date Event Hours Location at The District
Thursdays, Dec. 3, 10, 17 Farmers Market 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Main Street
Saturday, Dec. 5 Second Time Around Vintage Market 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Green
Saturday, Dec. 12 Market in the Alley 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Green
Saturday, Dec. 19 The Makers Hive Market 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Main Street

Market in the Alley features local makers, artists, musicians and food businesses. The Makers Hive Market is free, open to the public, and welcomes families and dogs. Every one of these markets is finished by 4 p.m., an hour before the cactus garden opens.

From publish day through January 1, 2027, The District also hosts the Light the World Giving Machines near Pottery Barn, where shoppers donate charitable goods and services. The newest storefront on that walk is Evereve. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the women's fashion retailer opened its first Las Vegas-area store at The District in late August. The 3,228-square-foot shop carries more than 150 brands and offers one-on-one styling.

Two Evenings When The District Stays Late

The District's schedule makes two exceptions to its daytime pattern, and both are worth putting on the calendar now.

The Annual Tree Lighting is Saturday, November 21, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Main Street, with snowfall, holiday music, treats, local artisans, character meet-and-greets and Santa lighting the tree. On Thursday, December 10, from 5 to 7 p.m., Toys for Tots: Fill The Truck parks on Main Street near Williams Sonoma and Bath & Body Works. Bring a new, unwrapped toy and you'll get $5 off a UNLV Rebel Hockey ticket.

Both evenings begin at 5 p.m., the same hour Ethel M opens its gates. On those two nights, Green Valley's two main holiday venues run at the same time, so a household that wants both has to choose an order.

Evening Belongs to the Cactus Garden

Ethel M Chocolates opened its 33rd annual Holiday Cactus Garden at 2 Cactus Garden Drive on November 5. It runs nightly through January 3, 2027, and no reservations are needed. Most nights the garden is open 5 to 10 p.m. The holidays change that. Hours are 5 to 8 p.m. on Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, and the garden is closed on Christmas Day. Entry is $3 per person, with a portion going to HELP of Southern Nevada and Three Square Food Bank. Children under 2 and adults 65 and older get in free.

The garden's most important cutoff falls an hour before closing. Santa visits daily from 5 p.m. until one hour before close through Wednesday, December 23, and the line is cut off at 9 p.m. sharp. Santa does not appear after December 23. If you'd rather not wait, the $40 Santa Express Pass reserves a time between November 6 and December 23 with front-of-line access for up to six people. Children under 2 and guests over 65 don't count toward the six. KSNV reported in October that a limited number of passes are released each night for advance purchase. Cashman Photography packages cost $35 for one framed 8-by-6 photo or $50 for two, tax included.

The garden also has a calendar of its own within its evening shift:

  • Henderson Silver Knights & Vegas Golden Knights Night, Friday, Nov. 20, 6 p.m. Wear Knights gear for free entry and a meet-and-greet with Lucky.
  • First Responders Night, Dec. 1 to 3, 5 p.m. Free entry with valid ID, plus 15% off in-store purchases.
  • Holiday Themed Trivia, Friday, Dec. 4 and Saturday, Dec. 12, 6 p.m. $5 plus tax per person, reservations required.
  • Live music with Sam Shades on Sunday, Dec. 20 at 6 p.m. and Jessica Manalo, a contestant on Season 27 of The Voice, on Tuesday, Dec. 22 at 6 p.m.
  • Winter Wonderland, Tuesday, Dec. 29. Snow starts falling at 5:30 p.m., Frozen screens at 6 p.m., Elsa and Anna greet guests, and a face painter is on site. $5 plus tax, reservations required.

On most other nights, local choirs and performers give free shows in the pavilion, typically at 5:30 or 7 p.m. The holiday bar, which pours a Chocolate Espresso cocktail, an Apple Pie on the Rocks and a Merry Mocktail, opens only in blocks. Most blocks run Thursday through Sunday. The first ran November 5 to 8, and the second begins on publish day, November 12 to 15. Later blocks fall on November 19 to 22, November 27 to 29, and December 3 to 6, 10 to 13 and 17 to 20, with a final run on December 26 and 27 and on December 29.

Ethel M asks visitors to park in its own lots or across the street at Smith's. Cars left in Green Valley Business Park or Roseman University lots risk being towed.

Late Night Belongs to the Terrace

The last shift opens on Friday, November 27, the day after Thanksgiving. Green Valley Ranch Resort's Winter at the Terrace turns The Backyard Terrace into a winter-themed pop-up lounge with fireside seating, handcrafted cocktails and light bites. It runs through December 27, Sunday to Thursday from 4 to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 4 to 11 p.m. Guests must be 21 or older, and table reservations are taken by phone at 702-617-7744.

On Friday and Saturday nights, the Terrace keeps serving an hour after the cactus garden closes, which makes it the latest stop in the neighborhood's holiday schedule. If you're hosting family for Thanksgiving itself, the resort's Hank's Fine Steaks & Martinis serves a $65 Thanksgiving Dinner on Thursday, November 26, from 1 to 9 p.m., with reservations at 702-617-7777.

One Saturday, Four Shifts

December 12 shows how these schedules fit together. It's a Saturday, and every venue in this post is open, with hours that overlap at the edges but close at different times:

  1. 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Elf Hunt at the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve, if you registered.
  2. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Market in the Alley on The Green at The District.
  3. 6 p.m. Holiday trivia at Ethel M's pavilion, reservations required, with the holiday bar open for its December 10 to 13 run. Santa's line closes at 9 p.m.
  4. Until 11 p.m. Winter at the Terrace at Green Valley Ranch, 21 and older.

The preserve fits before or around a late-morning market visit, and the Terrace stays open after Ethel M closes. A family with young children can fill the morning and the early evening, and a couple with a babysitter can start at the Terrace when Ethel M closes at 10.

After the holidays, Paseo Verde will have more stops to add. The Cliff, at 2500 and 2550 Paseo Verde Parkway, has signed The Taco Stand, Killer Whale Creamery, The Barista Botanist, Lyte House and Arhaus, among others, and the project site now lists delivery in 2027.

Holiday guests often show what a home needs, whether that's a casita for the parents who stay through New Year's or a courtyard big enough for the cousins after the tree lighting. If this season has you thinking about a property built around the way your family actually gathers, Cynthia Lauren Huff and Dream Construction can show you land and homes in Green Valley and the nearby estate areas that are planned for those visits.
